There is also another possiblity for cleaning out extra wood. I have a horse and grew up on a ranch in NW Nebraska. We have and use a hoof pick that is kind of like a screwdriver bent at 90' or so, but there is also another tool that is used to clean out the horses hooves and that is shaped more like a flat piece of steel, about 1/2" wide and at the end it is curved back in on itself and can be sharpened. That would allow some intricate digging and carving inside without getting too carried away.
Thought I'd throw out that 2 sense worth
